An extremely rare small bronze coin
Lot 549
WESTERN ASIA MINOR, Uncertain. 4th-3rd centuries BC (?). AE (Bronze, 9 mm, 0.42 g). Head and neck of a bull to right. Rev. Palm tree. BCD Euboia -. Biga E-Auction 10 (2022), 50 (same dies). BMC -. SNG Copenhagen -. Extremely rare. Minor roughness and with the reverse struck slightly off center, otherwise, very fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

Typologically, this small coin resembles obols from Karystos on Euboea from the 5th century BC, but it likely originates from western Asia Minor. A 4th century BC date for it seems plausible, when similar small bronze coins began to be established in Asia Minor. However, the absence of an ethnic could also indicate a significantly later minting, possibly as a token or tessera rather than a coin.
